NCLR News Release
THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF LA RAZA APPLAUDS NAMING OF CONGRESSMAN SILVESTRE REYES TO CHAIR HOUSE INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE
Washington, DC – The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., today applauded House Speaker-Designate Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) decision to name Congressman Silvestre Reyes (D-TX) Chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
"We welcome this historic appointment. Congressman Reyes brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this position," stated Janet Murguía, NCLR President and CEO. "The Intelligence Committee and the nation as whole will be well served by Congressman Reyes' leadership."
The announcement of Congressman Reyes' chairmanship follows that of Congresswoman Nydia Velásquez (D-NY) as Chair of the House Small Business Committee. In addition, the upcoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has appointed Senator Ken Salazar (D-CO) to the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over issues of critical importance to Latinos, including health care, child care, Social Security, and the Earned Income Tax Credit.
"The appointment of these distinguished Hispanic leaders to key committees is an important step," concluded Murguía. "They have the expertise to develop policies which effectively address the needs of all Americans. Fortunately, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus has a 'deep bench' of talented legislators, and we hope that Congresswoman Pelosi and Senator Reid continue to appoint Hispanic Caucus members to key committees and the highest level of leadership."

Defenders of Freedom 2007 Calendars
Our 2007 calendars have finally made it to the print shop. We had some delays due to our wounded troops getting pictures to us. This year our calendar is honoring three of our amputee troops, a fallen soldier, a collage page showing some of the troops we supported this year, showing some of the families that have been touched as well as some of our troops currently in Iraq right now. If you are interested in ordered a calendar you can do it online at www.defendersoffreedom.us. We will get them in the mail the day we receive them back from the printer.
Thank you for your past support of Defenders of Freedom. Together, we are making the difference in the lives of our troops. We continue to send requested items to our troops, which is maximizing the dollars entrusted to us. We are helping to keep the morale of our troops strong and they are very generous in letting us know. We receive thank you notes continually.
We helped to purchase a hand cycle for our amputee troops at Brooke Army Medical Center. Because of our generous support of our troops to our amputee troops, we were invited to join our amputees in a 150 mile bike ride. What a thrill to ride side by side with these fierce competitors. It was truly one of the most inspirational things I have ever done in my life.
Again, thank you for your past support. Please pass on the news that our 2007 calendars are available.

Pew Hispanic Center Advisory on Latinos and the 2006 Mid-term Elections
The Pew Hispanic Center today released a fact sheet entitled Latinos and the 2006 Mid-term Election that uses exit polls to compare the Latino vote in the 2006 election to elections in 2002 and 2004.
It also assesses the possible impact of the Latino vote in 2006 by looking at the Hispanic share of eligible voters in the most contested congressional races, the Latino vote in 30 House seats gained by Democrats and the outcome in districts with large shares of Hispanic voters.
